After overcoming decades of substance use, Cardwell has been clean and sober since October 2021, a milestone that marked the beginning of a new chapter focused on purpose and service.

He holds a Bachelor of Health Science in Mental Health and Addictions and has completed further postgraduate study. As a DAPAANZ registered practitioner, Cardwell applies evidence-based approaches alongside culturally grounded models such as Te Whare Tapa Whā and the Fonofale framework. His work is particularly focused on supporting Māori and Pasifika communities through holistic, whānau-centred care.

Known for his honesty and strong communication skills, Cardwell uses his personal journey to connect with others and foster trust. He is committed to helping people create lasting change, emphasizing accountability, resilience, and consistent effort. His long-term goal is to establish a private counselling practice in the Christchurch and Mid Canterbury region, supporting those who continue to face challenges with addiction and mental health.
